NICE recommends eye tests for people diagnosed with dementia

NICE updated its dementia guideline (NG97) to encourage people living with dementia to have an eye test soon after diagnosis if they have not had one recently.

NICE amended recommendation 1.8.11 on eye tests to ensure problems with eyesight are identified soon after a diagnosis of dementia to help reduce risk of falls and improve quality of life.(Last amendment June 2025)

Then patients should continue to have regular tests.

It also advises that healthcare professionals could consider “referring people who cannot organise appointments themselves”.
