BCLA webinar to explore journey of a presbyopic patient

Eye care professionals will be given an insight into the typical journey of a patient with presbyopia as part of an upcoming BCLA webinar.

The session, to be held from 7pm on Wednesday, 15 October, will trace the journey from the moment a patient is prescribed contact lenses.

The Webinar will provide practical, evidence-based guidance on the possible obstacles patients may face during their initial trial period such as contact lens handling, dry eye symptoms, and those everyday environmental challenges that can risk contact lens success.

Those attending will be given a better understanding of the critical need for tailored support to enhance contact lens retention among presbyopic patients by addressing their unique visual needs.

Attendees will also learn to evaluate presbyopic care through a holistic approach, considering lifestyle, ocular health, emotional factors and psychological changes, while also gaining practical strategies to improve patient satisfaction and ensure long-term success with contact lens wear – including communication techniques for ECPS and practice support staff.

The Bausch + Lomb sponsor-led webinar will be presented by Dr Sarah Smith, who said: “Presbyopia is not a barrier, but a natural progression in the contact lens journey. Drawing on the latest research and insights, the session will highlight strategies to personalise contact lens wear, reduce dropout rates, and support our presbyopic patients’ first steps; ultimately ensuring that lenses not only fit, but function in real life.”

Dr Smith has worked in a wide variety of roles in the optical industry, including in multiple and independent practices, in research, teaching and for manufacturers. In 2012, she was awarded her PhD which looked at the role of optometrists in the UK. Sarah’s main interests are contact lenses and dry eye; her work in this area allowed her to gain the BCLA fellowship in 2018.

The webinar is open to all and will be held from 7pm to 8pm on Wednesday, 15 October. One CPD point will be available.
