Delivering high-quality treatment for NHS ophthalmology patients in Wales
Independent provider Newmedica has been commissioned by NHS boards in Wales to help deliver ophthalmology services to more patients.

Newmedica’s expert teams will carry out a range of treatments at centres in Bristol, Gloucester, Shropshire, and Cheshire Oaks in England. More than 18,000 cataract procedures and 905 Oculoplastic and Yag laser procedures have been agreed overall during the period of the new contracts running from August 2025 until the end of March 2026.
‘Our aim is to support the NHS in providing timely access to essential eye care for people in Wales,’ said Karen Croker, contracting and managed services director at Newmedica. ‘By working together, we want to help patients maintain their independence and wellbeing through improved ophthalmology services.
‘We are proud to be working with our colleagues in NHS Health Boards in North and South Wales, along with those in primary and secondary care to deliver expert care and treatment at our consultant-led centres.’
She adds: ‘These new contracts build on the care and treatment Newmedica teams have already delivered for thousands of Welsh NHS patients on behalf of Welsh NHS Health Boards over the past year.’
Welsh patients travelling to Newmedica centres are offered fully funded transport to and from their local eye hospitals. Routine post-operative care continues to be managed through existing Health Board community schemes and local optometrists, maintaining continuity for patients.
All communications are handled by Health Board teams. Newmedica has also translated its materials into Welsh, with a dedicated Welsh-language webpage is available for patients.
